It's just before the clock strikes midnight and I am on the 21st storey of the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in Singapore with two wire photographers and a photographer from the local newspaper waiting for the fireworks to go off. It's the second time in two years that I've been commissioned by the Esplanade Theatres on the Bay to capture their New Year's fireworks display, and after all the cameras were set up and ready for the shoot, we had some downtime to reminisce about 2013.

We have to thank all our friends, fans and clients who have supported us over the past year, and give thanks for the numerous projects that we've had the fortune to work on! Social media outreach projects with DBS and the Ministry of National Development amongst others, documentaries (some for commercial clients) work on oil palm plantations in Sabah, 7th Month Getai shows as well as annual reports and ad campaigns for various companies and institutes and being enlisted as a Samsung Smartphotography professional have pretty much kept us swamped through much of 2013. That said, being busy is a "problem" that I refuse to complain about!

There are too many great people and clients to list here so a blanket THANK YOU will have to do for now. Suffice to say that if 2014 is in anyway similar to 2013, then I can't wait to get started on this year!

The Sony A7R with a Novoflex M to NEX mount and a Leica 21mm Summilux

There is a lot of hype over the new Sony full frame cameras the A7 and the A7R and yesterday (Sunday 17 Nov, 2013), the kind folk at Sony Singapore gave a few of us photographers the chance to take the A7, the A7R and the RX10 cameras out to see how we liked them.

Before I carry on, I have to let you know that I am only going to talk about the A7R as it was the only camera body I was really interested in.

Having a bunch of Leica M-mount lenses in my dry box (and having sold off my M9P earlier in the year) the A7R promised me what Leica had yet to give users in a digital body. An affordable tool that I wasn't too afraid to bump around, reasonable low light performance, and an electric viewfinder (EVF) that would allow me to shoot my 21mm without having to constantly recompose using an external viewfinder (though the new Leica M does have an optional EVF that allows the same thing). When you shoot at f1.4, the slightest deviation in distance to the subject can throw the focus (even of wider angled lenses) off.

Armed with 50mm and 28mm Summicrons and 35mm and 21mm Summiluxes, I decided to test the lenses to see how they performed on the A7R and to see how the Sony could handle these manual rangefinder lenses.

First Impressions

Handling:

The camera is extremely customizable. The only other camera that can be fine tuned this much would probably be the Ricoh GRD. I didn't get a lot of time to play with the customizable features and buttons, but suffice to say there are enough of them to keep me happy and allow me to personalize the camera to a great degree.
As mentioned in some of the reviews, the shutter IS rather loud. This is no big deal when you are shooting on the street or in normal situations, but no matter how much you as a user might get used to it, it WILL call attention to you, especially if you are in a quiet area and trying to be unobtrusive. I have done several shoots for HBO where they are concurrently filming video interviews as well as shooting stills, and I guarantee you the second the shutter button is depressed, a dirty look will be shot at by my the sound person and I would have to stop shooting in order to not botch up their sound feed. Ditto that for anything live theatre related.
The unit i tested came with a vertical grip that made the camera feel nice and balanced, I didn't have the chance to take off the grip to see how it functioned on it's own (ok, I didn't really think about it), but I am guessing it will still feel pretty comfortable. A couple of the button placements felt a bit strange (like the zoom button for the review image) but it was overall a pretty easy camera to get used to.

Shooting and Images:

- When I popped on the 21mm Summilux and picked up the camera, it didn't feel off balance, but when I lifted it up to my eye to take my first picture, I was overwhelmed at the amount of red that was showing up as part of the camera's focus peaking function. As mentioned earlier, when you shoot wide open on fast lenses, the chances of being off focus (by even a little bit) are quite high, and as the depth of field is so shallow, it's not hard to see where the mistakes are. I found myself having some trouble getting used to the focus peaking as it wouldn't just show the one sharp area that I wanted to focus on but also a myriad of other red lines and squiggles. Don't get me wrong, when you turn the focus ring on your lens, you will generally see the different planes of focus light up, but fine-tuning the EXACT focal point proved to be a bit of a challenge through the EVF if you don't use the zoom focus function.
This problem surfaced more with the wider angle lenses like the 21mm and 28mm and far less with the 35mm and 50mm lenses. I daresay I would be able to get sharp images even without focus peaking while using the 35 and 50, but note that the darker the environment, the tougher it's going to be to focus.

Now users of the wider lenses will definitely find some vignetting on your images. I however, actually like that look so that doesn't bother me in the slightest. Some users will also complain of chromatic aberrations at the edges of the frame (especially with ultra-wides) but since I shoot mostly in black and white, this too is fine by me.

It would seem that the optimum environment for the A7R to thrive would be in well-lit (especially outdoors) areas with anything from a 35mm and longer lens. The camera worked exceedingly well in these situations. Focusing was easy with the now bright EVF and the familiar Leica signature look of the lenses shines through.

At the end of the day, I am looking for a camera to fit a very specific niche. Something that can (for the most part) replace my M and make use of the collection of M-mount lenses I own. Color is not a priority, but sharpness and ease of use is. While we were loaned out prototype cameras to test with, I was assured by the Sony techs that the production models would have better low light performance and more accurate focus peaking.

Is it a great camera? Well by all indications, Sony has themselves a winner here and are definitely leading the pack at making cameras that people want at this time. I have no doubt that users looking for a full frame system without the weight of traditional DSLRs are going to love this. The AF of both the A7 and A7R is pretty zippy (with the A7 being ever so slightly faster in most situations) and the lens catalogue for the system is only going to get more impressive.

Does the A7R check all my very specific boxes? Based on the prototype's performance and my experiences so far, my heart says "go for it, it can do most of what you want it to" and my head says "don't rush, test out the final release and then decide."

I have a tendency to follow my heart.

Exhibition: In An Instant

Thanks to the folk at Peek! and in collaboration with the IMPOSSIBLE Project, photographers Chia Aik Beng, Ivan Kuek and myself will be having an exhibition, In An Instant, at the Peek! Workspace.

With 120 photographs between the three of us, the exhibition merges both the modern technologies of mobile photography and fuses them with traditional analogue technologies. Using the Impossible Instant Lab and PX 680 Instant Film (I want so badly to say "Polaroid" but alas, that is still trademarked by Polaroid. You get the idea though!), we transferred images from our mobile devices (iPhones and iPod Touches at this point) to the instant film using the Impossible Project App.

The results? Well come down and have a look and see for yourself!

The exhibition launch will be on Friday 15 Nov, 2013 from 8-10pm at the Peek! Workspace at 36 Armenian Street, #02-04, Singapore (179934)

If you can't make it to the launch, no worries, the exhibition will run till the end of January 2014. Exhibition hours will be from Noon to 8pm from Tuesdays to Saturdays and from Noon - 7pm on Sundays. Please note that the gallery is closed on Mondays.

It's finally out!

Three weeks of shooting and 22 portraits later, the 20th Anniversary edition of ELLE Singapore is out on bookstands everywhere.

A bit of a whirlwind shoot, but one that was lots of fun with the chance to shoot a whole slew of fun (and surprisingly down to earth) bunch of influencers from Irene Ang and Beatrice Chia-Richmond of Fly Entertainment (above), to Dick Lee and other theatre folk like Alvin Tan and Haresh Sharma of the Necessary Stage, Ong Ken Sen and Tay Tong of TheatreWorks, Selena Tan, Charlotte Nors and Gaurav Kripalani from the Singapore Repertory Theatre, Ivan Heng, Alfian Saat and Glen Goei of WildRice, Hossan Leong, and Tracie and Adrian Pang of Pangdemonium.

Exhibition: Urban Living: The Future Is Not What It Used To Be

Turns out that my swirly picture of the F1 street race in Singapore will be in an exhibition titled Urban Living: The Future Is Not What It Used To Be.

Curated in conjunction with The Future of Urban Living conference organized by the Singapore Eisenhower Fellowships Society & Centre for Liveable Cities, the exhibition will also feature works from photographers Caleb Ming, Chia Ming Chien, Darren Soh, David Lim, Deanna Ng, Joseph Nair, Lawrence Chiam, Philipp Aldrup, Min-Wei Ting, Marcel Heijnen, Romain Jacquet-Lagreze, Sherman Ong, Ted Chen, Sim Chi Yin, Stefan Chow, Stephane Lasserre and Tan Ngiap Heng.

The images in the exhibition navigate current discussions on the future of urban living and address the ever-changing notion of the future of cities. The exhibition also reflects upon issues such as the built environment, urban density, urban population, the relationship between nature and the city and imagines what the city of the future might look like.

It will be open to the public from 17-26 October 2013 at Level 3, City Square Atrium, Raffles City Shopping Centre at 252 North Bridge Road, Singapore 179103.

The F1 season in Singapore has finally come to a close and this was the most diverse one for me yet. Practice sessions One and Two were spent at the Sky Suite on Turn 3 compliments of the good folk at Performance Motors where I actually had a chance to enjoy the action without worrying too much about work.

Qualifying was spent shooting turn 9 of the track from Swissotel The Stamford, and Race Day was spent covering an after party with Paris Hilton on the decks at ME@OUE.

While many folk may complain about traffic snarls during the F1 weekend here in Singapore, I have to say that it's actually one of the more fun events on my calendar. One that I look forward to each year!

Featured: Samsung Smart Photography

It's been quiet here on the Updates/News page recently, not because I've been lying low, but because I've been very busy with a bunch of projects, so expect a slew of updates in the coming weeks!

However, one of the things I would like to share is my being featured as the "Expert of the Month" on Samsung's Smart Photography website, an initiative to showcase the work of local and regional photographers, to give tips to aspiring photographers as well as an insight into the kind of work I do and how I go about doing it!

There are even a couple of workshops where I will get to meet with members of the Singapore photographic community to talk more about travel and street photography. You can register for that here.

Another pretty cool thing for photo enthusiasts is the chance to win a spanking new Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom by taking part in the monthly challenge. I always say that one of the easiest ways to improve oneself as a photographer is to keep looking at pictures, and not just "like" or "dislike" them, but to actually take time to examine what you actually appreciate about them, or to dissect them and figure out what about the picture doesn't appeal to you.

This would be a great time to start!

I have to admit to being biased towards friends, but it just so happens that Darren Soh, Sim Chiyin and Tan Ngiap Heng are the ones with the (to me at least) most compelling images.

Work In Progress: Getai 2013

For the first time in over 15 years as a photographer, I decided to head on down to the heartlands this year to check out the Getai scene. Translated literally as "Song Stage", a Getai is usually a boisterous affair held during the 7th Month (or "Hungry Ghost") Festival in Singapore and Malaysia.

Originally meant for the amusement of wandering spirits during this time of year, the Getai has evolved into an eagerly awaited annual event. Performers dressed up in gaudy outfits are ferried around with military precision to different Getai venues by minders, belting out Mandarin and dialect (mainly Hokkien) tunes to the crowds that throng these open spaces in the heartland.

This time, I made a conscious effort to not bring the usual assortment of big camera bodies and lenses opting instead for a simple set up of two point and shoot cameras, one with a 21mm and another with a 28-90mm zoom. This gave me the flexibility to blend in (however much a large, non-Chinese looking man can anyway) and not appear too serious. Also, the small cameras help to stave off the onset of EPBP (or Eventual Photographer Back Problems) which is always a good thing.

Most of all, I did this because it was fun, because I had no brief, and because I could just go out and shoot what I saw and not have the pressure of having to make pictures for anyone other than myself.

So here are some pictures of this work in progress and I definitely hope to add on more over the next couple of weeks.

Lastly, one cannot talk about Getai photography without giving mad props to photographer Bob Lee who has just published a book on the whole phenomenon entitled "Onstage Offstage". A definite keeper.

I'll write up another post on that as soon as purchase details are out.

What makes a photographer tick? Do "the perfect shot" or "the decisive moment" exist? In this series of mini documentaries, we uncover the processes and motivations behind internationally renowned photographers from Singapore. Through interviews and reviews of their works, we attempt to get to the heart of the work and their approach to art creation.

Photographers love pictures, but photographers also love the backstory on pictures and to learn how differently other photographers work.

While we've been busy looking at documentaries on the masters, we often forget that Singapore has their own elite set of visual documentarians and image makers.

Photographer Tan Ngiap Heng together with Objectifs Centre for Photography and Film and production house The Creative Room shot three short documentaries in 2012 of prominent Singapore photographers Chow Chee Yong, Tay Kay Chin and John Clang in an effort to showcase the different styles and also as an educational tool to allow both aspiring and seasoned photographers to have an insight into the processes and motivations behind these individuals.

Now, after the success of these initial three videos, Image Makers plans to film six more documentaries, this time of local photographers Chua Soo Bin, Jerry Seh, Russel Wong, Darren Soh, Robert Zhao (Zhao Renhui) and Ho Hui May. With vastly different backgrounds and styles, this would definitely add on to give a more complete picture of Singapore photography.

Image Makers have created an indiegogo page to crowd source for funds to help make these documentaries a reality so please support them in whatever way you can.

Learn about the craft and process of fine-art photographer Chow Chee Yong in a documentary directed by Pok Yue Weng. Chee Yong has participated in more than 30 solo and group exhibitions in galleries and museums in Hong Kong, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore and the US.

Learn about the craft and process of photographer/visual artist John Clang in a documentary directed by Kirsten Tan. John Clang is a photographer artist. His fascination with time, displacement and existentialism influence his work. His first exhibition, at 20 yrs old, was a duo-show at the controversial (and now defunct) Singapore art group 5th Passage Artists.

Learn about the craft and process of documentary photographer Tay Kay Chin in a documentary directed by Chen-Hsi Wong. Tay Kay Chin, a Singapore-based photographer, spent more than a decade in newspapers in Singapore and USA, and held positions from Photographer to Presentation editor.

Project: MND Heartlands

I am currently into week two of a six-week project with the Ministry of National Development documenting the Singapore heartlands with two other photographers who specialize in mobile photography, Chia Aik Beng and Ivan Kuek, founder of the Singapore Instagram group.

Like the DBS Regatta 2013, this too is a social media campaign designed to encourage Singaporeans to explore the places and spaces that they live in and I have to say that it's been a pretty fun one thus far, one that allows me to wander around and capture any and everything that piques my interest.

Follow the project on Instagram under the hashtag #SGHeartlands and share your own intimate moments from your neighborhood by using #SGHeartlands as well. Some of my work will also be posed under the MND Instagram account (@MNDSingapore) so be sure to follow their account for more updates!

If you are in Singapore and have no plans to go out tonight, be sure to catch a feature on the 100 SINGAPOREANS book by Singaporean portrait photographer Wesley Loh as it makes its prime time debut during "On The Red Dot" on Channel 5 this Wednesday 7th August 2013 at 9pm.

Shot over a period two fully dedicated months, this passion project developed into a book as the photographer attempts to nail down the Singaporean identity in simple, straight-on, black and white portraits of Singaporeans of all walks of life.

Definitely worth the watch.

Hands On: Sony RX100II

Chia Aik Beng, Callan Tham, a handfull of tech/photo blogger and I were kindly invited by Sony Singapore on the night of August 1, 2013 to have a hands on preview of the new Sony RX100II.

While definitely a much anticipated, if sudden update to Sony's already wildly successful RX100 point and shoot camera, I took the chance to see if it was worth the hype.

Having already owned the RX100, I know the quality of the lens and its performance at f1.8, so for this short trial run, I decided to try and shoot everything at f4 to push the sensor and see how it performs at higher ISOs. On picture quality alone in low light situations, the RX100II outdoes the already nocturnal RX100 by producing images with even less digital noise while maintaining crisp, sharp pictures.

Now I'm no techie when it comes to gear. I don't pixel peep and I don't compare specs. I just take pictures and see if I am happy with the outcome and I have to say I definitely am impressed with this little bad boy.

The lens and body size are the same as the RX100 (ok the body is SLIGHTLY thicker to accommodate the tiltable LCD screen (Sony's funky cool name for it is the 3.0” White Magic™ LCD monitor with a resolution of 1,229K dots. Sounds good enough) and the "Multi Interface Shoe and Multi Terminal" aka hotshoe.

Other new additions to the RX100II are a new 20.2MP 1.0-type back-illuminated Exmor R (all these tech names!!), built in Wi-Fi and NFC.

This whole NFC get up is pretty cool too! By simply tapping the camera to and NFC equipped smartphone or tablet (sorry iPhone/iPad users... for now) you can establish a Wi-Fi connection that allows you to transfer files to your device (yes Instagram users, that means you can now transfer on the fly, edit and upload, all in one fell swoop) by using the Sony PlayMemories Mobile app (free). You can even shoot remotely from your mobile device once it's set up.

So enough about the tech stuff, here are some pictures. I apologize that they aren't, compositionally, anything to shout about, but I do hope that they show the performance of this latest gem from Sony.

Firing up the engine of an A330 at the Pratt & Whitney plant in Singapore.

I couldn't start the title of this post with the word "shoot" (for obvious reasons) but I think you get the point.

Since leaving newspapers a couple of years ago, I have had lots of fun working on new (and different) projects, but it's times like these that make me remember why editorial and documentary work will always be my first love.

I had the privilege of spending a short afternoon with US Vice President Joe Biden together with a select group of media photographers (thought it wasn't that intimate, what with the 30-car motorcade and hundreds of officials and Secret Service Agents) during his recent visit to Singapore on a whirlwind tour through Asia.

The rushing, the waiting, the sweating, the running, the huffing and puffing, all served to boost my adrenaline past their usual sedate level and I had fun throughout the whole thing (though to keep my street cred, I engaged in the usual amount of complaining that usually occurs between fellow photojournalists.)

People say that news photography is dead (or at least dying) but I, for one, believe there will always be a place for pictures that are more than grip and grins.

There are many occasions where I give thanks to my newspaper training and this shoot with actress Olivia Munn is definitely one of them.

Photojournalists rarely have the luxury of time to plan their shots and often times have little more than a couple of minutes to recce and come up with a photo. As a young intern photographer at the Evansville Courier & Press oh so many years ago, I remember fretting about my next day's assignments, always trying to plan ahead. Inevitably, I'd arrive on the ground, and nothing would be the way I envisioned it.

After awhile you learn to trust yourself to not worry so much and just go with the flow upon arriving at your assignment.

I had around 45 seconds with Ms Munn (who was very accommodating and easy going which made things a lot easier) , and I'm glad to have trusted myself yet again.

If you haven't heard of Scott Strazzante, where have you been?

A photographer at the Chicago Tribune, Scott is one of those photographers that other photographers want to be. With a Pulitzer under his belt, he was also NPPA Photographer of the year (and runner up) and has been the Illinois Photographer of the Year an obscene number of times (I think it's 9 and counting).

Now you'd expect someone like that to be a bit of a wanker, but he is also one of the nicest guys I know, and one who always has time to talk about photography on top of dishing out good advice.

I first met Scott while I was an intern at the Aurora Beacon-News in 2002 when he worked at a sister paper in Joliet, IL and he was already a star, but it wasn't until I returned to Singapore that came across his project Common Ground on the MediaStorm website.

I thought this was an awesome way to tie up two separate long term projects and merge them into one and used the multimedia slideshow as an example for my students on how sticking at a project long enough will lead them in directions they would not have anticipated.

So when I found out that Scott was running a Kickstarter campaign to raise funds to turn the project into a book, I was hyped to say the least.

A weekend of fun shooting for DBS at this year's DBS Marina Regatta 2013 at the Waterfront Promenade at Marina Bay was definitely something new and interesting. Usually laden down with lots of backache-enhancing equipment, this was the first time where a job entailed going around with a mobile camera, with the only deliverables being pictures uploaded to Instagram.

Definitely strange seeing friends and ex-colleagues at the event carrying the usual payload while I walked around with a point and shoot. Felt positively naked... but in a good way.

An open brief to shoot whatever I wanted that was great and the constraints of using a compact ended up being a boon as I walked around chasing the light and uploading every now and then.

An interesting experience I would be happy to do again.

Now to pack up to leave in 5 hours for a shoot in Sabah, Eastern Malaysia. More updates to come.

Had a fun time shooting Daniel Koh today as part of a feature for A Design Film Festival Singapore 2013. Daniel, a designer and DJ mixed the soundtrack for the upcoming event which will be held on June 15-16, 2013 at the School Of The Arts (SOTA) in Singapore.

The festival, organized by Anonymous after a one year hiatus will feature 12 outstanding films and if you haven't already bought tickets, you should definitely get them soon at http://www.designfilmfestival.com before they run out!
